The Phantom of the Opera w/ The Invincible Czars

Home > Fall 2018 > The Phantom of the Opera w/ The Invincible Czars

Event Information
"Lon Chaney stars as Erik, the Phantom, in what is probably his most famous and certainly his most horrifying role. Produced by Universal, the film was shot in 1923 and shelved for nearly two years, and was subjected to intensive studio tinkering. While many expected a disaster, the film turned out to be a rousing success. It was both the stepping off point for Chaney's run as a superstar at MGM and the prototype for the horror film cycle at Universal in the 1930s." (Paul Brenner, All Movie Guide) This edition presents the 1929 theatrical version, restored from archival 35mm elements by Film Preservation Associates. It is highlighted by the Technicolor Bal Masque sequence (in which the Phantom interrupts the revelry wearing the scarlet robes of the Red Death), as well as meticulously hand-colored sequences (replicating the Handschiegl Color Process).

The film will be accompanied by the Austin-based ensemble The Invincible Czars performing their original score for the film. The Czars have enthralled Ithaca audiences the past two years with their intricately crafted and precisely performed silent film soundtracks for Nosferatu and Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde. The band was part of a wave of acts that began creating new soundtracks for silent films at the original Alamo Drafthouse. The Czars were the only band that kept adding movies to their catalog, mixing up instrumentation, creating custom artwork and wardrobe and taking their shows farther and farther from home each year. Cornell Cinema is thrilled to welcome them back for what promises to be another spellbinding evening in Sage Chapel! More about the Czars at invincibleczars.com
